Helen Y. Chu
M.D. M.P.H., Professor, Internal Medicine & Infectious Disease
Helen earned her MD from Duke University. She completed her internal medicine residency at Harvard-Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and her fellowship and MPH at University of Washington. Her research is focused on emerging respiratory viral infections and maternal-fetal immunity against respiratory viruses.

Amanda Casto
M.D. P.h.D., Acting Assistant Professor, Internal Medicine & Infectious Disease Physician-Scientist
Amanda’s research interests include viral genomics, population genetics, and evolution.
Eric J. Chow
M.D., M.S., M.P.H, Infectious Disease Fellow
Eric earned his BS, BA and MS at Stanford University. At Eastern Virginia Medical School, he earned his MD/MPH in 2013. In 2017, Eric completed a residency in combined internal medicine and pediatrics at Brown University where he also served as the pediatric chief resident. After residency, he joined the CDC’s Influenza Division where he worked on the epidemiology of respiratory viral infections. He is board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics and is now pursuing a fellowship in adult infectious disease.

Natalie Lo
M.P.H. OTR/L, Director of Program Operations
Natalie earned her MSOT and MPH degrees in New York at Columbia University. Prior to relocating to Seattle, she practiced as an acute care Occupational Therapist in a community hospital, and worked as a Project Manager in health services research at the VA in the Bay Area in California. She has enjoyed global health and volunteering opportunities in South Africa, Dominican Republic and Indonesia. She completed her BS in Biological Sciences at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
Tara Ogilvie
M.P.H., Program Manager
Tara Ogilvie serves as a research coordinator for various projects in the Chu lab. She earned a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Psychology and Neuroscience from Seattle Pacific University. Her interest is in developing sustainable solutions for addressing health disparities and evaluating social determinants of health among Indigenous populations, specifically understanding the epidemiology of chronic diseases among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islander (NHPI) communities.
Madison Hollcroft
M.P.H., Research Coordinator
I graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Public Health-Global Health and later earned an MPH with a focus on Epidemiology. Prior research includes evaluating PrEP uptake at an LGBTQ+ facing clinic in Jackson, Mississippi and tracking factors associated with the rise of syphilis among cisgender women in King County. My current role in the Chu Lab as a research coordinator on the CASCADIA project includes managing the REDCap database. My research interests include addressing health disparities in infectious disease and using community-driven data collection and analysis to improve disease prevention. Outside of work I enjoy expressing myself creatively through art, crafts, dance, cooking, and growing plants.
Tiffany Mei
M.P.H., Research Coordinator
Tiffany is originally from Boston, MA and moved to Seattle for a change in environment. She earned her MPH with a concentration in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Tufts University and plans on returning to school for nursing. Working as a Clinical Care Technician was what sparked her interest in infectious diseases. Outside of working, she enjoys baking, hiking, and trying out new restaurants. A fun fact about her is, she has driven across the country seven times.
Collrane Frivold
M.S.P.H., Ph.D. Student, Graduate Research Assistant
Collrane is a PhD student in the University of Washington’s Department of Epidemiology. Her primary research interests include infectious disease epidemiology, vaccine delivery, maternal immunization, and clinical trial methods. She holds an MSPH degree in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a BA in Biochemistry from Occidental College.
Sarah Cox Kraus
M.S.P.H., Ph.D.
Sarah earned her MSPH in International Health: Global Disease Epidemiology and Control at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Washington. She has experience working in industry, government, & research, and is the co-founder of two global non-profit organizations. Sarah is passionate about vaccine implementation, infectious disease modeling, and reducing health disparities.
Julia C. Bennett
M.S.P.H., Ph.D. Student, Graduate Research Assistant
Julia is a PhD student in UW’s Department of Epidemiology. Her research interests are vaccine-preventable disease epidemiology and infectious disease surveillance. Julia received her MSPH in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control with a certificate in Vaccine Science and Policy from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and her BS in Psychobiology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Chidozie Declan Iwu
MPH., PhD Student, Graduate Research Assistant
Chidozie is a PhD Epidemiology student at the University of Washington. He holds an MSc in Microbiology and MPH in Epidemiology and Disease Control from South Africa. His research interest is focused on the epidemiology of emerging/re-emerging microbial diseases, respiratory disease surveillance, vaccines, and global disease burden. When he is not occupied with school or work, he is either hanging out with friends, biking, or listening to music, mostly Afrobeat!
Erica Clark
M.S., Research Scientist
A Colorado native, Erica earned her B.S. in Biochemistry from Ithaca College in upstate New York. After graduating Erica moved to Seattle, working for Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center in the HIV Vaccine Project for over 6 years. She then pursued a M.S. in Biology in Kansas studying Ferruginous Hawks. After graduating she again moved to Seattle with her husband. Her research interests include ecology, immunology, GIS and birds.
Jenni Logue
B.S., Program Manager
I graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and a minor in Applied Mathematics. As an undergraduate I performed research using zebrafish as a model to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying hearing loss. My research interests include molecular biology, computational modeling of biological systems, and epidemiology.

Melissa MacMillan
B.A., B.S., Research Coordinator
Hailing from Mercer Island, Melissa now lives in Seattle with her husband, daughter, and two cats. She has worked at the University of Washington for over seven years as a research scientist and research coordinator. In her free time she enjoys camping, reaching' ‘Queen Bee’ on the New York Times Spelling Bee, spending time with her daughter, and attending concerts.
Mark Drummond
B.A., Software Engineer
Originally from Kansas City, Mark moved to Seattle with his wife in 2009 and has worked in the Allergy & Infectious Diseases division at UW for over ten years. He earned a certificate in full stack web development from the University of Washington and is now the Chu Lab’s software engineer. He is web developer, microcontroller tinkerer, cooking enthusiast, and dad to one toddler and one crazy dog.
Dylan McDonald
B.A., Research Coordinator
After growing up in Seattle, Dylan moved to New York and graduated from Bard College with a B.A. in Biology. There she pursued her passion for academics and athletics, balancing the life of a double-sport student athlete. Dylan plans on returning to school to work towards a Master of Public Health with a focus in Global and Public Health. Her interests include sustainability, accessibility to healthcare and women’s sports.
Devon McDonald
B.S., Research Coordinator
I graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in Environmental Science. Most of my undergraduate studies focused on salmon conservation and habitat restoration, and I performed research engineered log jams providing refuge for Chinook salmon. My current interests include environmental health, sustainability and backpacking.
Tessa Wright

Tessa received her BS degree in Biology from Pacific Lutheran University. She enjoys learning about research in all subfields of biology and is excited to be a part of the Husky Coronavirus Testing study team. When she is not at work, you will find her dancing.
Anna Elias-Warren
B.S., Research Coordinator
Originally from New Jersey, Anna moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington. She is currently pursuing a B.S. in Public Health with a Data Science minor. Her current areas of interest are maternal and child health and infectious diseases, and in the future, she hopes to get an MPH with a focus on Epidemiology.
Helen Nguyen

Helen was born and raised in Seattle and is currently a senior at the University of Washington. She is in the process of completing a double degree with a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Anthropology. Her areas of interest are human physiology, nutrition, and infectious diseases. She plans to pursue a Masters of Science in Nutrition as well as earn certification to practice as a Registered Dietician Nutritionist.
Kino Watanabe

Kino earned her B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Physiology from the University of Washington. Her current areas of interests center around infectious diseases, neuroepidemiology, and health equity. She hopes to attain an MPH in the field of Epidemiology. Outside the lab, she enjoys exploring parks, trying new bubble teas, and cooking.
Grace Marshall
B.S., Research Scientist Assistant
Originally from Dallas, TX, I earned a B.S. in Public Health from the University of North Carolina with a concentration in Environmental Health and a minor in English Literature. Currently in the Chu lab I work as a lab technician, processing samples for the CASCADIA Study. My interests include women’s health and reproductive rights and environmental sustainability.
Daniel Nguyen

Born in Seattle and raised in Shoreline, Daniel pursued a Bachelors in Medical Anthropology & Global Health at the University of Washington. His current area of interests are public health, statistics, accessible design, and bioinformatics. Outside the lab, he enjoys photography, tennis, and exploring new food places.
Kristen Huden
A.A.A.S., Research Scientist I
Born and raised in Seattle, I recently earned my AAAS to become a Biotechnology Lab Specialist. From 2017-2018 I worked for UW research on a Wound Healing study for the Department of Defense. My current role in the Chu lab is Research Scientist Assistant. My work on the HAARVI Study includes specimen collection, data entry, and basic lab maintenance. I am interested in microbiology, epidemiology, and biomimicry.
Lindsay Engelbert

Originally from Colorado, Lindsay is pursuing a B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Physiology and a nutrition minor at the University of Washington. Her current areas of interest are infectious diseases, immunology, and accessibility. When not at work or in class, you can find her on a hiking trail, enjoying live music, or buried in a good book!
Rino Watanabe

Rino is currently pursuing a B.S. in Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology at the University of Washington. Her current areas of interest include health equity and justice, infectious diseases, and global health. After graduating, she plans to one day apply to medical school.
